FAI lights the Futsal Fire! Ever wondered
what the ingredients are for a never ending production
line of World Class soccer stars? Five times World
Champions, Brazil appears to have discovered some
of them with their seemingly endless supply of
World Champions from the days of the great Pele
right up to today’s superstars like Ronaldinho.
However, the FAI is now beginning to focus on
a key element widely recognised as being an integral
ingredient in the development of these highly
gifted players. The game of Futsal (from the Portuguese,
futebol de salao and meaning indoor football)
has been cited by such luminaries as Pele and
Ronaldinho as having a major impact on their development
as players. The legendary Pele said: “I played
Futsal for 2 or 3 years before I joined Santos.
Futsal was important in helping to develop my
ball control, quick thinking and passing. Also
for dribbling, balance and concentration….futsal
was very, very important, no doubt”. Futsal is
the Official UEFA and FIFA version of indoor 5
a side football and most Brazilian youngsters
grow up playing little else until they reach the
age of 12 or 13. Futsal is a high tempo game played
with a size 4 ball which is designed to have a
reduced bounce. The consequence of this is that
the ball tends to stay close to the floor more
often which accelerates the development of skills
such as passing, dribbling and close control.
The small pitch size also means players have to
think quickly and react with a quick pass or a
dribbling move to get out of tight situations.
The result over time is the production of highly
skilled, quick thinking, creative players! Perhaps
you may have seen the recent advert on TV featuring
footage of a very young Ronaldinho displaying
dazzling skills on a Futsal court. This is testimony
to the type of player Futsal can produce and the
greatest endorsement of the game available. World
Player of the year Ronaldinho doesn’t sit on the
fence when he talks of his love of the game and
how it helped him as a young player. He says:
““Futsal is an extremely important way for kids
to develop their skills and understanding of the
game. My touch and my dribbling have come from
playing futsal.” Not only is Futsal a great tool
to help develop gifted players, it’s also a game
of high professional profile across the world.
Spain for example has a full time professional
league of 18 clubs. There are an estimated 110
million players participating in Futsal across
the world. FIFA and UEFA have recognised the popularity
of Futsal and have established World and European
Championships competitions taking place every
2 years. If you want to learn more about Futsal
and the FAI’s plans to develop the game, you are
welcome to attend a Futsal workshop which will
take place as follows: Venue: De La Salle Hall,
St. Gerald’s College, Castelbar. Date and Time:
21st September from 7-9pm Just to let you know
that there will be a Futsal Workshop in De La
Salle Hall, St. Gerald’s College, Castlebar on
Thursday 21st September 2006 from 7pm – 9pm. The
work shop will be hosted by Derek O’Neill and
assisted by Development Officers, Niall Harrison
and Paul Byrne. The players on the night will
be provided by the Mayo Academy. So come along
and see an alternative to the 11-a-side game and
if it interests anyone in your club/organisation
the development officers can discuss setting up
a possible Futsal league/competition.

year in the North-West we have a great selection
of venues for our FAI Summer Soccer camps. We also
have our Goal-keeping specialist camp back again
for the fourth year. This year in Mayo we have five
soccer camps scheduled. As always on our soccer
camps, all of our coaches hold soccer specific coaching
qualifications from the Football Association of
Ireland or an equivalent soccer governing body.
Remember, all of our Summer Soccer camps are open
to both boys and girls
The Programme; This years FAI Summer Soccer
camps are designed to give all participants(Boys
and Girls) five football packed days of fun, skills
and games. The FAI Summer Soccer camps shall run
Monday to Friday inclusive, from 10.30am to 3pm
with breaks for light lunch and refreshments. The
specialist goal-keeping camp shall take place on
Saturday and Sunday Venues and dates; August 7-11;

Vacancies on Swinford Camp: The Football
Association of Ireland report a spectacular increase
in the take-up of places on their Summer Soccer
Camp programme. This Summer season, the FAI will
host more than 200 camps in every corner of the
country and the numbers taking part will comfortably
represent a 30% increase on the previous record.
Philip Behan, is the FAI National Co-Ordinator,
PEPSI Summer Soccer Schools, and he said: "We are
very encouraged by the increasing pick-up in all
areas. There has been a slight slip in the number
of girls taking the courses and we find there are
some people who do not appreciate the fact that
they can report and sign up for the camp on opening
day. "There are some people who believe if they
have not booked in advance they will not be invited
to take part, but the opposite is the case. "We
can cater for a capacity of from 100 to 150 children,
boys and girls, and to look after them we will have
a team of especially trained and qualified professionals,
men and women, to cater for them." The FAI are also
running specialist camps for goalkeepers and this
year's programme includes 15 camps, exclusively
for goalkeepers. They have also factored into the
mix special camps for Gaeltacht areas where Irish
only is spoken by the children and those running
the camps. Four of these special camps will be held
in Gweedore, Donegal, another in Glenea, Donegal,
in Carraroe, Co. Galway and in Dingle, Kerry. The
camps are for children aged from seven to fifteen
and run from Monday to Friday, 10.30 am to 3 pm
each day. In the event of inclement weather making
it impossible to work and play out-doors, then the
course will proceed indoors where facilities allow
and this applies at many of the venues. Said Mr.
Behan: "The object is to provide fun and enjoyment
for the children in a safe environment while they
apply themselves to improving their football skills.
"The safety of the children is paramount, of course,
and there is emphasis upon the safety aspect of
the sport, such as handling equipment like goal-posts,
for instance. "The FAI have a dedicated officer
whose job is to get to know the coaches. They are
vetted, references are checked and we take pride
in the safety aspect of our programme." The biggest
camp of the Summer programme to date was held in
Blanchardstown IT when there were more than 100
participants, boys and girls of a multi-ethnic background.
The success of the camp was of particular satisfaction
to the FAI. Said Mr. Behan: "The participants came
from a disadvantaged background and the fees were
covered by seven organisations. "The voluntary organisations
covered the costs of the camp and they included
the St. Vincent de Paul, the Garda Siothchana, Co.
Dublin VEC, Corduff Community Youth Project, Blanchardstown
Gardai, Councillor Felix Gallagher, the Schools
Completion Officer and Fingal County Council. "It
was a marvellous example of society in action for
the common good, it was society helping the underprivileged
by using soccer as a vehicle for social integration
and it was particularly satisfying to see that 20
girls took part in the camp." The participants in
each of the courses receive a gift pack when they
first report - jersey, shorts, football, shoulder-bag,
water bottle and upon completion of the week they
will receive a certificate of participation. The
charge for the week's participation is €89. The
Gaeltacht camps are part subsidised and the charge
for each individual is €40 while the goalkeeping
camps cost €60. The full Summer's programme of camps
is listed on the FAI.ie website. And those who have
not yet applied, need only turn up on the morning
of the course to register and participate fully.
Pepsi are again sponsors of this year's Soccer Schools,
and have thrown their support behind the programme
with promotional activities and advertising, including
providing the fantastic Dream Prize - check out
Ireland AM on TV3 this week to be in with a chance
to win.

Mayo Referee to Run Line in UEFA
Cup: Congratulations have been extended to Damien
McGrath on his recent appointment as assistant referee
in the forthcoming UEFA Cup qualifying round between
Valur of Iceland and Brondby of Denmark to be played
later in the month. Damian, a teacher in Scoil Mhuire
& Padraig (Swinford), is Secretary and a member
of the Mayo Branch of the Irish Soccer Referees
Society, has been refereeing for 4 years in the
Mayo League and in the eircom Under 21 League. He
has been on the full National League panel of referees
for the past two seasons, where his appointments
have been mainly in the Western region. Damien made
the breakthrough in 2001 as an associate referee
when he took up refereeing schoolboys matches and
it was the Mayo Schoolboys/Girls and Youths AFL
that nurtured his potential talent to the level
that he enjoys today. Damien’s understanding of
the FIFA Laws of the Game was a testament of his
rapid rise within the refereeing circles of Mayo.
Referees Course: A number of clubs indicated
from the recent Club Questionnaire that they would
have individuals from within their club available
to take up refereeing. A Beginners Course for Referees
will take place on Thursday 24th August in Milebush
Park at 8.00pm. Please check out in your club with
anyone interested in doing this course. The course
will be conducted by Michael Cresham (Mayo Assessor),
and Willie Bradley (Connaught Regional Assessor)
under the auspices of the F.A.I. All those interested
should contact Michael Cresham 087 2221325 or Damien
McGrath 087 9776172. As most clubs are aware there
is a genuine shortage of referees, this is an opportunity
for your club to address this problem in a positive
way.
Kick Start 2 Course: Took place in Milebush
Park on Friday 7th, Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th
July 2006. The course was ran by Niall Harrison
and Padraig Nicholson of the FAI. Twenty participants
took part in an intense course that covered theoretical
and practical modules and each participant was put
into different groups and were asked to put on different
sessions based on warm ups, passing, dribbling,
heading, shooting shielding, 3V0 and 3V1 to name
from various drills. The course was based on the
coaches observing a session and to identify key
factors from a particular drill. The direction of
modern coaching is based on facilitated learning,
where the coach asks the player the question about
a particular phase of play and the player needs
to identify the problem and to correct it. It was
a very beneficial course and all participants that
took part would have learned something that they
would certainly take back to their clubs and the
LMC of the MSGYAFL would like to extend many thanks
to Niall and Padraig for the development of coaches
that are needed to set the standards for development
of the underage player to his or her full footballing
potential.
Results: All home teams are asked to please
ensure results are text in to 087 0548106 after
each game. The League Secretary is still not getting
the needed response. Your cooperation with the League
Secretary is paramount to the smooth running of
all your leagues.

AGM of the Mayo Schoolboys/Girls
and Youths AFL: Recently took place in the Welcome
Inn Hotel in Castlebar. The meeting was opened with
a minute’s silence for the late Mary Walsh, Vice
Chairperson of the League, who passed away last
July. The Chairman of the League, Tom Mullins, welcomed
John Durkan from the Mayo League, Damien McGrath
from the Mayo branch of the ISRS and to Martin O’Hanlon,
Acting Hon Secretary of the SFAI. In his address,
Tom Mullins described 2005 as the most successful
year to date in terms of international caps, seven
Mayo boys and girls were capped for their country,
an international captain and at lest three more
players being assessed and it was a tribute to the
work of the Academy. On of the highlights from the
Academy was the U.13’s trip to Carrington where
they beat Manchester United Academy 7-2 and a visit
to the City of Manchester ground where the players
were introduced at half time at the Manchester City
V Portsmouth game before 46,000 people. Congratulations
were extended to all winners of all competitions.
Also the clubs were commended for developing the
game and the success of teams in external competitions
have forced the League into a backlog of domestic
fixtures. Many thanks were expressed to the referees
for their dedication and their job does not get
any easier and the clubs were asked to treat the
match officials with respect. The Academy was thanked
for their work, to the coaches, Pat Naughton, Pat
Gavin, Paul Fielding, Brendan Kenny, Paul Byrne,
Liam Loftus and Peter McDonnell, who give so much
of their time for the development of the boys and
girls and organise trips for games. Also, gratitude
was expressed to Michael Rowland who manages the
Mayo U.16/U.18 squads, to Niall Harrison, RDO for
the FAI for advice and presentations and to the
following clubs for making their facilities available;
Snugboro United, Killala, Ballyheane and Manulla.
The MAFL was thanked for their co-operation over
the last year with their facilities made available
to the League and they were wished the best of luck
in the development plans of extra facilities at
the county headquarters at Milebush Park and they
were accorded full co-operation from the MSGYAFL
for the new venture. A special word of thanks was
given to Dave Breen for taking on the fixtures along
with his already onerous task as Secretary, given
that there were 142 teams last year to partake in
the League programme at boys and girls and thanks
to the clubs for assisting Dave in making the task
smoother. To other important members of the League,
Pat O’Connor, Brian Johnson and Kenneth Gannon for
their input for running the League so professionally.
Three new members were formally welcomed onto the
LMC, Michale Fox of Ballyheane, John Moran of Westport
and Christy Rowland, Glenhest. A special word of
thanks was given to the former Chairman and Coordinator
of the League, Jeremy Dee for his commitment and
dedication of the League and the very best of luck
to him in his new role as Chairperson of the Mayo
Ladies League. A word of thanks was given to the
sponsors of the MSGYAFL; Chadwick’s, Castlebar,
AIB, Lynch’s Breaffy House Hotel, Al Murretto’s
Italian Restaurant, Castlebar, Ballyhaunis Credit
Union, Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar, O’Brien’s Trophy
Centre, Claremorris, Blackfort Machinery, Castlebar,
Oliver Kelleher Trophies, Castlebar, Gerry Kenny
Sports, Ballina, Umbro, Joyce and Sons Contractors,
Westport and Tim Hastings and Sons LTD, Westport.
It was reminded to the clubs that participation
was paramount, winning was secondary and enjoyment
was everything. The address was wrapped up with
a tribute to Mary Walsh RIP: To a person who made
herself available to all types of sport in Mayo,
from Community Games secretary to Chairperson of
Women’s League to Vice Chair of the Mayo Schoolboys/Girls
and Youth League and the Development Officer of
Mayo Girls Football. When we look back on your achievements
we wonder how you were able to give so much of your
time to sport in the community plus your time with
family and work. You were the mother of all girls
in sport, totally committed committee member. You
were always there when called upon to help out,
whether it was at a gate collection, making tea
and organising coaching sessions for your club,
county or Community Games. We thank you for your
time spent with us and also the memories. In your
own words “Aragh someone has to do it and isn’t
great to be able to do it?” From all of us thank
you Mary RIP. In his Secretary’s Report, Dave Breen
opened with a tribute to Mary Walsh and was described
as just not a League Officer but a friend to all
and would be sadly missed not just in football but
in all sports. Also tributes were paid to Jeremy
Dee for the colossal amount of work that was put
into the League and that he was thanked for his
help. The website was beset with some teething problems
over the last year and that a backup system will
be put into place to help improve the website and
that all information will be up to date. Despite
the growing popularity of small sided games, there
was an element of concern of U.10s and U.11s football
being taken too seriously by the clubs and that
these games should be simply fun and enjoyable experiences
for the kids. The external competitions, with new
formats has made it difficult to fix in domestic
games over the winter months, compounded by the
success of the Mayo clubs. Congratulations were
extended to all the winners over the past year and
to the clubs that have done exceptionally well in
external competitions. The League will be seeking
guidance from the clubs as to when the U.18 League
will commence for the new season. The work at the
Academies was continuing under the guidance of Head
Coach, Paul Fielding and there is also the exciting
prospect of the FAI Emerging Talent Programme that
will be coming on stream in August. The Local Soccer
Partnership Committee was launched by CEO of the
FAI, John Delaney and FAI Technical Director, Packie
Bonner in January. The committee is made up of representatives
of all the governing bodies of Mayo football, including
members of the MSGYAFL. The Mayo Sports Partnership
is also represented and it is hoped that the schools
and local public representatives will join the body.
The mission is to promote and face the challenges
that exist within the game at county level in a
unified and harmonious comportment. One of the goals
is increased participation in all levels of the
game. Some of the clubs have reached saturation
point and are not able to increase numbers due to
lack of coaches or facilities. There are some junior
clubs with no underage structure and the MSGYAFL,
alongside the Local Soccer Partnership will be tackling
that issue during the year. The numbers of registered
players continue to increase and the signs looks
towards further increases in registration and participation
within the game. The Mayo branch of the ISRS was
thanked for their help and cooperation over the
last year. The clubs are encouraged to members to
take up refereeing, be it full or associate status,
where they can retain club status. It is the intention
of the League to punish heavily on abuse towards
referees. There are a shortage of referees and the
League cannot afford to lose anymore officials.
Clubs were reminded on the penalties for playing
overage players as the League received rumours,
but the League cannot act on such unless accompanied
by official evidence of the alleged offence. The
Secretary looks forward to working with the clubs
on a positive basis and that clubs were welcome
to attend the LMC meetings if there was a problem
that they would like to discuss. The delegates were
reminded that the League is ran on a voluntary basis
with the members trying to hold down a full time
job. There are several vacancies on the LMC and
if anyone was interested in making a contribution
to the League, they were advised to contact any
LMC member. In his Treasurer’s report, Brian Johnson
outlined to the clubs that the last five years have
seen the League progressing beyond expectations
and the challenge was to prepare the finances to
meet the new, greater challenges that exist within
the League, which is one of the most professionally
ran in the country. In his Registrar’s report, Pat
O’Connor outlined the explosion of numbers participating
in underage football in Mayo. In 1994, only 994
children registered, the figure nearly doubled to
1,691 in 1996. The figure remained pretty dormant
with 1,646 registerd in 1999. In the last six years,
that figure climbed to an all time high of 3,291
registered kids, making it the fastest growing team
sport in the county at underage level for active
playing members. The motions from Ballina Town regarding
that U.12 boys league consist of a Premier Division
with 11 a Side football and the lower divisions
played on a small sided pitch at 7 a Side level
was referred to an EGM. The Girls U.12 League to
be played at 7 a Side on a small sided pitch was
passed. The U.13 League proposal that it would not
be ran in 2006 was referred to the next delegates
meeting. The timing of the U.16 League being reviewed
with the possibility of it being in tandem with
the School year was being looked at. Kilmurray FC
motion on underage blitzes/tournaments hosted by
clubs affiliated to the MSGYAFL should adhere to
the guidelines drawn up by the MSGYAFL regarding
players and substitutes, pitch size and markings,
size of ball, entry fee per team, referees qualifications
and that member(s) of the MSGYAFL would visit these
blitzes to see that these guidelines were being
adhered to. Christy Rowland and Michael Fox produced
a document with the same points from the MSGYAFL
and the motion was adopted. Dave Breen was returned
as Secretary of the MSGYAFL by Marion Casby, Kiltimagh/Knock
United and Gerry Sweeney, Bangor Hibs. In his speech
to the delegates, the Acting Hon Secretary of the
SFAI, Martin O’Hanlon thanked the MSGYAFL for inviting
him to the AGM in Castlebar and he commended the
League for the ways it professionally runs its business
and pointed out the professionalism of Brian Johnson
who is also a member of the SFAI Executive. He paid
tribute to the work at the Academy and praised the
teams that travel to the Kennedy Cup for their conduct
and for the ways they play football which was a
joy to watch and attracted the attention of different
scouts and that the work that has been done is an
example to other leagues across the country. He
went on to wish the LMC the very best for the coming
year. Damien McGrath, Secretary of the Mayo Branch
of the ISRS addressed the meeting and asked clubs
that as there was a shortage of the men in black,
that they would go back to their committees and
try to get whistlers out to referee matches and
ease up the dearth of referees within the county.
MSGYAFL On Tour: Two teams from the Mayo
Schoolboys/Girls and Youths AFL have been on tour
to Britain of late. On the 8th-11th April, the Mayo
U.14 side visited Doncaster under the Head Coach,
Paul Fielding and played a number of games against
local academy sides. Meanwhile, the Mayo U.13 Kennedy
Cup squad, led by Paul Fielding, travelled to Wrexham
last week to play against some of the established
academy sides of North West England and North Wales
and by all accounts the kids enjoyed their experience
and the local sides were very impressed with the
work that is done at the Mayo Academy. The Mayo
U.14 Girls will be travelling to Cork on Friday
for the Bishopstown Tournament that will be held
on Saturday and Sunday. International Caps: David
Joyce got called up for the Republic of Ireland

Western U.18 Cup Semi Final:
Mayo travelled to Ballinasloe on Saturday to take
on Roscommon in the semi final of the Western Cup.
There was a mix up in communication as the Mayo
side were under the impression that it was a 2:00
kick off, while Roscommon were informed that it
was a 3:00 start. The atmosphere was electric, literally,
as there was forked lightning from a passing shower
during the first half, one of a few rain and hail
showers that fell on the banks of the River Suck
during the game. Getting to the football, both sides
could not find the deadlock, with Ivan Barrett coming
close and Jonathan Griffin hitting the post while
Shane Nallen pulled off one superb stop. Mayo started
the second half strongly and were soon in the lead
through Ivan Barrett. That was shortly doubled by
Cian Gilmore and Mayo were on the ascendancy. David
Lowther had a brilliant volleyed strike that thundered
off the post and Ivan Barrett volleyed wide. Mayo
soon began to tire and Roscommon came at Mayo to
net two late goals, the equaliser came at the last
kick of normal time, leaving it 2-2. In extra time,
the best chance for Mayo fell to Ivan Barrett as
he was 1v1 with the keeper, but the keeper won out
in that duel. In the penalty shootout, Mayo were
unlucky to lose 5-4 after sudden death. Jonathan
Griffin’s effort was saved but Ivan Barrett, Liam
Foy, Shane Nallen and Sean Bradley all netted. Unfortunately,
the lightning did not strike in Mayo’s favour on
the day but the players can hold their heads up
high.

& Senior National Cups 2006: These competitions

Football Department. The Participation Forms for
the respective cups have been forwarded to all club

received the participation forms, you can obtain

All forms must be completed and returned to the
FAI Domestic Football Department by close of business
on Friday 14th April 2006. Please note there will
not be an entrance fee for these National Competitions.
For further information, please contact Niamh O’Farrell
in the FAI Domestic Football Department on 01-7037510.
Congratulations: Are being extended to the
following; To the Kiltimagh/Knock United U.14 team
in defeating Cherry Orchard 1-0 in the quarter final
of the SFAI Goodson Cup. Dylan Webb got the all-important
winner. It is the first time that a Mayo side have
reached the semi final of the Goodson Cup and the
Knock based club have a home tie against Crumlin
United. In the FCS Connacht U.16 Cup, Castlebar
Celtic travelled to Drom against a very good Salthill
Devon outfit and performed marvelously to defeat
their Galway opponents 4-3 after extra time. In
the Statoil FAI Junior Cup, Castlebar Celtic defeated
Clonmel Town 1-0 to set up a semi final date with
Athenry, a great achievement for the County Town
club and that all involved in Mayo football will
go out and get behind Celtic to keep the Statoil
FAI Junior Cup in County Mayo. Commiserations to
Charlestown Athletic U.12s who were defeated 3-0
in the FCS Connacht Shield Final by Barna FC, but
they did their area proud in reaching that far and
they had a marvellous season.
International Caps: It has been a very busy
week for Mayo underage soccer stars in getting caps
for their country. David Joyce played for Vinny
Butler’s Republic of Ireland U.16s as they drew
1-1 away to Belgium in the KRC Stadium, Mechelin
on Thursday evening last. On the ladies front, Eilish
Nevin took part in Sue Ronan’s Republic of Ireland
U.19 team as they drew with the Dutch counterparts
1-1 in Richmond Park, Dublin last Tuesday. Two days
later, in another 1-1 draw with Holland at the same
level in the AUL Complex, Dublin, Aoife Herbert
played her part in that game. Both girls put in
serious performances and both have been named by
Sue Ronan in the squad to face Switzerland away.
The LMC of the Mayo Schoolboys/Girls and Youths
AFL would like to congratulate all those players.
LMC Meeting: Will take place in the Welcome
Inn Hotel, Castlebar on Thursday night, April 13th
at 8:30. All committee members are asked to attend.
Clubs With More Than One Team per League: Clubs
will be given their first two games to identify
their A and B/C panel of players. The League must
then be advised of the designated squad of each
team. Players will then be allowed to transfer up
but they cannot transfer down. Clubs must note that
cards will be monitored after the third game and
if the rule is in breach, the match will be awarded
to the oppostition.
David Joyce Called Up Again: After recently
starring in Israel, David Joyce is currently in
the Irish U.16 squad that is currently in Belgium.
Congrats to David. Also, on a similar note, commisserations
to Castlebar Celtic in their unfortunate penalty
defeat against Wembley Rovers from Limerick in the
FAI U.17 Cup Semi Final. The Celtic boys did their
county very proud indeed.
Results: The secretary, Dave Breen requests
that all results would be text in to the results
line, 087-0548106. He is getting a fairly good response
to this and could you please pass on to managers
again as it saves ringing round looking for results.
In the case of external competitions, all home clubs
and teams travelling outside the county must text
in their results. Any club that fails to follow
the directive will be issued with a notice of an
immediate €25 fine.

SFAI Cups: Congrats goes to
Kiltimagh/Knock United and to their under 14 team
that defeated Villa from Waterford recently in the
Goodson Cup on a fine scoreline of 1-0 and are now
in the last 16 of the competition. Also playing
recently and did very well but unfortunate not to
have gone any further were Claremorris in the Norton
Cup. They were defeated 1-0 at home by Newbridge
Town while also in the Norton Cup, Kiltimagh/Knock
United put in a brave performance as they went down
2-0 to top Dublin nursery outfit, Home Farm in Whitehall.
In the Barry Cup, Castlebar Celtic travelled to
Dublin to take on the south side club Lourdes Celtic.
Celtic put in a marvellous display and at the very
end were extremely unlucky to have gone out on a
3-2 scoreline.

Visit Mayo: The coaches from Liverpool FC Academy
visited Mayo on the 5th-6th January, coaching in
Milebush and Killala. Along with the coaches was
Jim Waldron, Irish Head Scout. The coaching in Milebush

Westport United since 1997, particularly coaching
teams and guided the Westport United U.14 team to

Mayo U.18 2-0 Sligo/Leitrim U.18:
Mayo got their Snickers/FAI Youths Inter League
competition back on track against Sligo/Leitrim
on Milebush on Saturday. Following their unlucky
1-0 defeat away to Inishowen, Mayo knew that a win
would keep their interest in the competition alive
and the chances came in the first half, mainly through
Mickey Sweeney. At the other end, Gary McNicholas
kept Mayo in the game with some good goalkeeping.
The second half saw Mayo making their breakthrough,
when Ger O’Boyle produced a left foot rocket into
the top corner. Minutes later, his brother, Ronan
O’Boyle produced a lovely sidefoot to make it 2-0.
David Lowther was inspirational in the middle of
midfield and the result means that Mayo needs to
beat Donegal in their final group game.
International Caps: David Cawley came on
as sub in the 3-1 defeat against Holland in Zeist
and started in the 1-0 defeat against the same opponents.
Ronan Murray was sub in the 1-0 defeat against Holland
in Zeist. Congratulations is being extended to both
players.
FAI Senior Cup: Congratulations is being
extended to Simon Webb, formerly of Ballyhaunis
FC, who won the Carlsberg FAI Cup with Drogheda

Ailish and Tara Nevin were part of the team. Ailish
Nevin is shortlisted for the Eircom Womens U.19
Player of the Year. Congratulations to all.

togged on the pitch for 11:30 and the U.16-U.18
girls are asked to do so likewise at 1:45. It is
very important that every club gets their players
there for the trials. If anyone knows of any exceptional
talent who is not directly involved with a club
please contact Niall Harrison, Pat O'Connor or Dave
Breen with details. The Mayo U.16 manager, Peter
McDonnell, will be in attendance that day to check
out talent for the forthcoming Mayo U.16 Squad.
