The 2004 season has turned out to be quite constructive
in the progression of girls soccer in Mayo. By far the
most impressive advancment was the introduction of an
U-12 league for our budding international players.
The man/woman power needed to kick start another league
in another age group is awsome. All the plaudits should
go to the men and women in each of the clubs that set
about providing an out let for the young girls in their
clubs.
And a special mention for committee member Mary Walsh
who has ensured that not only do we now have an U-12
girls league, but that we have also started an U-12
girls cup.
It is vital to the growth of the sport in Mayo that
we see new teams coming on board each season, and this
year saw Claremorris and Castlebar Celtic and Killala
enter the arena.
Along with relative new comers Manulla and Bangor the
number of clubs promoting girls soccer is growing steadily
and we look forward to the day when each club in Mayo
has two or three teams in their ranks.
And remember, special thanks to committee member Pat
O Connor for bringing the girls U-17 International tournament
to Mayo last Easter. What an experiance to have America,
England, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland playing
international matches in Ballyheane, Manulla, Celtic
Park, Swinford and Milebush Park. Lets look forward
to the next full international in Mayo.
